Storm Damage Roof Checklist for Hudson Valley Homes

Practical steps after strong wind, rain or ice without climbing onto the roof.

Updated October 20, 2026 · Educational guide

Strong wind, heavy rain, falling branches and winter ice can expose weak points in a roof. After a storm, start with safety. Do not walk on a wet, icy or damaged roof and do not climb up to take photographs.

Look from the ground

Walk around the property only if conditions are safe. Look for shingles or roofing material on the ground, lifted flashing, debris in valleys and gutters, tree limbs contacting the roof, and damaged soffits or roof edges. Inside, watch for new ceiling stains, dripping near roof penetrations or attic dampness.

Document what changed

Take dated photos from safe locations and note when the wind, rain or ice occurred. Keep invoices for emergency mitigation. Photograph interior water intrusion and preserve a record of communication with any contractor or insurer.

Protect the home from active water

Where safe, move valuables away from leaks and catch dripping water. For electrical hazards, ceiling sagging or major damage, contact the appropriate emergency professional. A roofer can advise whether temporary protection or prompt investigation is needed.

Inspection, repair or replacement?

Storm damage can be isolated or extensive. Roof age does not determine the answer by itself. A physical inspection can help establish whether flashing, shingles, decking or other components have been compromised. For insurance-related claims, work from your policy and adjuster's requirements rather than claims that coverage is guaranteed.

Hudson Valley conditions vary across Orange, Rockland, Putnam, Westchester, Dutchess and Ulster counties. We review property-specific requests and confirm whether inspection appointments are available.

Need a property-specific opinion?

Start by telling us the address and concern. We can discuss an inspection and, where appropriate, whether a preliminary satellite estimate is useful before visiting.
